O2 has recently launched the long awaited O2 Wallet in the UK – a mobile payment system that will offer money messaging, shopping comparison and aim to begin the task of ending the need for a real wallet. The app is downloadable as a free application from the Android Play Store, Apple App Store and BlackBerry App World.

Customers can load money into their O2 Wallet account via one of their debit cards, by receiving a ‘Money Message’ or with cash at more than 30,000 locations including O2 shops, PayPoint and epay retail outlets. Customers can also shop with their O2 wallet, which incorporates a barcode and search engine function. This also allows consumers to compare prices on goods from more than 100 online retailers. This also includes daily discounts deals accessible within the application. At launch these include discounts and money off offers from retailers such as Debenhams, Comet, Sainsbury’s Direct, and Tesco Direct.

The new service creates an easy and efficient online payment experience for mobile device users, supporting the continued growth of m-commerce in the UK, as well as encouraging contactless payments among those users who choose to take a physical card. This announcement is another step towards an integrated future where the way we pay reflects the full potential of these new technologies.

The application is available for download here.

Facebook has recently released an updated version of its Android app, but this update is not merely a refreshed version of it’s predecessor, in fact the new Facebook for Android will act as a distribution centre for other Android apps. This update will help drive additional growth for Android apps by making it easier for users on Facebook to discover and re-engage with their favorite apps on their phone.

Where previously native Android apps that used Facebook login couldn’t get distribution through Facebook discover channels, users can now discover native apps directly from Facebook for Android using the same social channels, such as Requests, Bookmarks, and News Feed, that are available on other platforms.

Android developers who currently use single sign-on can visit their app settings to enable deep linking. After that, the native app will open when users tap on Facebook stories or requests within Facebook. For example, Spotify users will be able to instantly play songs from their Android devices when they tap on a friend’s listening activity.

This recent update is a clear sign that Facebook is aiming to become an important distribution mechanism for developers — mobile web developers, iOS developers, Android developers, everybody who makes apps for phones and tablets. Facebook is, in a nutshell, is giving developers as many options as possible to get more distribution and more traffic through Facebook’s own network — and sustaining their growing importance in the mobile world.

This is a huge milestone for the company, which launched the original iPad two years ago, a device took over a month to sell 1 million units.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide marketing, said, “The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold–the strongest iPad launch yet. Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”

For the promised perspective – this is more than the combined sales of RIM PlayBooks and Motorola Xooms in a whole year. The new record also signals that the introduction of the iPad 3 has generated a vast amount of customers that are first time tablet users, increasing the market size of tablets and thus becoming a crowning achievement for Apple.

With the rising popularity of tablet devices, the need for iPad and tablet apps that utilise all the exciting features of next generation devices is growing rapidly. Pocket App combines years of industry experience with cutting edge technology to deliver tablet apps that showcase the true potential of this new and exciting technology. When designing apps we have excellent attention to detail, ensuring that every feature of your app is appropriately developed to the highest standard. We will endeavour to work closely with you throughout every step of the development process, ensuring 100% satisfaction with the end result.

Google’s digital marketplace for mobile applications, music, movies and books is merging under a new name in an effort to enhance user experience. Google has rolled out new branding for its store, revealing that Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore will now become part of Google Play.

Google Play will become the single destination for all of the company’s buyable content. Accordingly, the standard Android books, music, and video apps will become Google Play Books, Google Play Music, and Google Play Movies. But it’s not just about devices. Google Play is meant to bring together the company’s content offerings in both mobile and browser.

Google Digital Content director Jamie Rosenberg in a blog post said Google Play is entirely cloud-based so all your music, movies, books and apps are stored online, always available to users, and users never have to worry about losing them or moving them again- matching Apple’s iCloud and iTunes Match offerings.

The marketplace will become a portal for users to download and interact with their music, films, books and apps from their phones, tablets and elsewhere on the web. With Google Play, the company hopes more people, who went to the old Android Market to buy mobile apps, will start noticing other types of content and consider buying an electronic book or album, too. The revamped store can be found on the Web at http://play.google.com .

After the session BlackyBerry interviewed our CEO Paul Swaddle to find out what a leading app development company thought of their announcements. Paul highlighted the clear opportunity of porting Android apps to the BlackBerry environment, something that the Pocket App team are now able to do for clients.

Additionally Paul was able to confirm that many of the statistics presented by BlackBerry would be of significant interest to both current and future clients, particularly the fact that 13% of developers on BlackBerry World had achieved revenues of over $100,000!

The Pocket App team recently teamed up with Grey London to help develop London’s first virtual charity shop- The Cabinet of Dreams. The purpose of this initiative is to raise donations and provide awareness for the Women’s Aid Foundation. Women’s Aid is the key national charity working to end domestic violence against women and children, supporting a network of over 500 domestic and sexual violence services across the UK.

Through incorporating a SMS donation tool and our mobile expertise, customers can now easily engage in charitable giving and support this worthy cause. The team here at Pocket App is rightly proud of their engagement in the charitable giving sector, which started as early as 2005 when the team helped the British Legion run the first Poppy appeal as a digital download.

More recently the team have turned their attentions to using premium rate SMS as a donation tool embedded within mobile applications, for charities such as the Eve Appeal on iOS. Now, the latest development is the embedding of SMS donations in Facebook applications.

Please contact any of the team to find out how we could help your charity make the most of mobile.
