Safer seas & river service app is the only national Water Quality service keeping users in the loop with what’s happening where in UK waters. An award winning platform that lets users be served the latest pollution forecast compiled from the Environment Agency, NRW and SEPA for 400 locations across the UK. The app had been through several iterations before we took the code on to improve the UX and maintain for the non-profit organisation.

Our process

The application had been built many years ago originally built for an SMS based service evolving into a standalone application utilising Xamarin. Post an in-depth diagnostic phase, the code was handed over to Pocket App to complete some much needed framework updates and rework of some of the core user experience. Based on user feedback, workshops and modern UX practices several updates were made to the onboarding experience to reduce drop out rates & gain push notification permissions for as many users as possible. Other updates to include user accounts, improvements to the map and alert screens were made prior to moving into a deployment phase to maintain the application for a period of time post relaunch.

The results

The application was relaunched within time for the start of the next bathing season in order to maximise the outreach and usability to the existing large user base. The introduction of firebase enabled the previously under utilised tracking and analytics to monitor the app usage more closely during the next season. This proved invaluable in terms of gaining a deeper understanding on how the large user base were actually using the app and closer monitoring of downtime, issues with the map alert system and enablement of additional reports and user generated content. Surfers against sewage have subsequently developed the app themselves to continue on from the learnings and work completed with Pocket App.

My Housing Issue – TDS

The TDS Charitable Foundation commissioned Pocket App to design and develop a digital platform, My Housing Gateway. The platform’s primary purpose is to assist tenants in navigating the increasingly complex dispute resolution process and provide guidance on resolving their housing issues.
