Apple is reportedly planning a “directed focus” on stabilizing and optimizing the next generation of its mobile operating system, iOS 9, as opposed to introducing a bunch of new features. iOS 9 won’t have big aesthetic changes like iOS 7 or iOS 8 – iOS 9 will probably bring under-the-hood improvements.
The major update for Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch for 2015 is expected to take a step back from the rapid release of new features in favor of building on the existing framework to make sure everything already offered works more consistently. Apple has done the same thing with desktop updates in the past, most notably with “Snow Leopard,” the update to OS X that followed Leopard and brought exactly the kind of stability improvements described in this new report to Macs.
In terms of specific fixes planned for iOS 9, in addition to general optimization and performance boosts, Apple will be focusing on making the OS size and update storage requirements as lightweight as possible, in order to accommodate 16GB device owners initially near 5GB, which exceeded many users’ available storage space. Though it was possible to install the update via USB, thus alleviating the need for storage space, many users reported frantically deleting phone contents to make room for the new software. Other new feature additions will also ship with the marquee iOS 9 update, the site suggests, but the primary focus will be on the stability improvements it brings.
It’s unclear whether this might be accomplished by limiting iOS 9 support to relatively recent devices. If the iPhone 5c, original iPad mini, and fifth-generation iPod touch are discontinued by the end of 2015, all of Apple’s “currently available” iOS devices would be using 64-bit A7, A8, and A9 processors. This could simplify iOS development for both Apple and third-party app developers.
There’s no official timeline for the release of iOS 9 yet, though Apple typically announces the new version of iOS each June and releases it in the fall.
