Pocket App designed and developed a bespoke app for the parties’ main conference to digitise the conference handbook and event listings. The application consists of main agenda and fringe items which allows users to search for an event of their interest, gain details on speakers associated with that event and navigate their way around conference via the use of mapping functionality. Another key component is the live Q&A feature allowing users to interact with the presenter on stage to ask the panellists questions. To gain access, the users are required to scan the barcode on their pass and this gave participants the opportunity to submit a question, upvote questions submitted by other attendees and filter by most popular / recent.

Our process

Over the years, the approach has evolved from originally using a physical handbook containing details on the agenda items, to creating a mobile application which provides the attendees with a more effective and efficient way to plan their time at the conference. For the initial development, the content in the application was provided by a 3rd party, Rushmore digital, which was then funnelled through Pocket App’s middleware to reflect on the frontend of the application. The following year, we had to adapt the application to accommodate for the new hybrid nature of the conference being a physical and virtual event. We integrated the app with the Conservative Party’s new 3rd party events provider, Platform Group. This required us to re-write our database to mirror Platform Group’s database structure along with re-mapping the front end to accommodate for the prerequisite database changes and present the new appropriate data within the updated application.

The results

One of the most successful features of the application was the Live QA functionality. Due to increased demand at the beginning of conference, all main stage events started utilising this function rather than just the select few that it was initially intended for. The audience were highly engaged with the ability to interact with the panel via the application which in turn, raised the popularity for the live events.
